Foil FX - Help and advice

Woven highlights using Foils is the preferred technique for multi-toning hair. The visual effects are unlimited and unique and there are new exciting colour combinations and techniques happening each year.

Follow our step by step guide to successful Foil FX application and be part of this creative and artistic phenomenon that is gripping the hairdressing industry……

  1. Brush the hair to examine the growth patterns and to remove tangled hair. Check for areas where highlights would be conspicuous or unsightly. Look for natural parting areas and confirm how hair is to be worn.
  2. Prepare tools, including the cut foils to the required length. Put on disposable gloves and apron and prepare colour mixture.
  3. Divide the hair into two equal sections starting at the back of the head at the nape, divide, section and secure out of the way the remaining hair. Pick up a horizontal section of the hair and, with a pin tail comb, weave out of the section the intended hair to be coloured.
  4. With the foil placed at the root and extending beyond the hair length proceed to apply the colour/bleach to the hair evenly. Ensure the foil is long enough to protrude beyond the hair length.
  5. Fold the foil to envelope the hair so that the colour is not squeezed out. Continue onto next section with the alternating colour/bleach.
  6. Repeat this process with the foils and colour up the back of the head and through the sides.
  7. Your foil application is now complete. Now you need to monitor the colour development throughout the processing.
  8. Foil removal – each foil must be removed individually by rinsing thoroughly until the entire product is removed. This ensures that the colours do not run and bleed together.
